The Story Behind SHFT
A Brief History
Hi, I'm Sophie, the owner of SHFT. I love functional training, lifting heavy, challenging myself, and attempting to run.
But this wasn't always the case. Despite growing up dancing—practising ballet, tap, and modern—I never actually considered myself "sporty". It wasn't until my late teens that I truly found fitness, and honestly, it completely changed my trajectory. That late discovery sparked an absolute obsession with human performance. I threw myself into learning, coming out the other side with a BSc with First Class Honours in Sport and Exercise Science, plus two Master's degrees: one in Strength & Conditioning Coaching and another in Applied Sports Nutrition.
From there, I built my career in elite sport. I've always been drawn to the idea of being the "team behind the team." My coaching journey has taken me from working with Division 1 Ice Hockey players in the US, to supporting Team GB athletes at the English Institute of Sport, coaching Olympic swimmers in Sheffield, and working in rehab with the Royal Ballet School. I even spent time lecturing in Higher Education to pass that knowledge on.
Why SHFT Exists
Throughout all those experiences in high-performance environments, I noticed a massive gap. There is a huge disconnect between the holistic, multidisciplinary support available to professional athletes and the quality of coaching offered to everyday gym-goers.
I wanted to bridge that gap. SHFT exists to bring that elite standard of intelligent programming, nutrition guidance, and long-term progression to the general population. We replace quick fixes with sustainable methods, bringing it all into a space that is welcoming, completely unintimidating, and built on genuine community.
Our Approach
We are coaching-led and human-first. We believe in purposeful training that supports your life rather than dominating it. Whether you are aiming for a HYROX, a half-marathon, or just want to move without pain, our approach is sustainable, adaptable, and designed to help you progress consistently over time.
Values in Practice
Community
Training is better together. Members train hard side-by-side, support one another, and feel part of something consistent. Sessions are welcoming without losing focus. Coaches actively engage and build real relationships over time, whether that's in class, at the run club, or over a coffee in the lounge.
Integrity
We are honest about what training can achieve and transparent in our methods. Sessions are delivered with purpose, not ego. Coaches prioritise safe, effective progression over flashy trends or quick fixes, ensuring clear communication and sound decision-making always come first.
Quality
Every interaction at SHFT matters. Sessions are expertly programmed and coached with meticulous attention to detail. We care deeply about movement quality, ensuring you get the most value out of every single minute you spend on the gym floor.
Sustainability
We promote physical and mental longevity. Training, coaching, and nutrition are designed to keep you strong, capable, and progressing for years, not just weeks. Sessions leave you feeling energised, helping you find a rhythm that fits around your work and family life.
Accessibility
We meet you where you are. High-quality training should be available to everyone. Sessions are completely scalable, and coaches ensure every member feels capable, supported, and included, regardless of their starting point or fitness background.
